A tense moment inside an MTA bus following a disturbing incident.
A Bronx man has been sentenced to nine years in prison for stabbing a 35-year-old man on an MTA bus after a dispute over an apartment door. Destiny Bryant and Cheddie Defrietis’ argument escalated, leading to Dayshawn Bannister’s violent act against Peter Crosby. This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding crime in New York City’s transit system, despite recent declines in subway crime rates.
In the vibrant city of New York, a startling tale unfolded recently when a Bronx man was sentenced to nine years behind bars for a truly shocking stabbing incident. This series of unfortunate events, which began over a dispute regarding an apartment door, showcases just how quickly situations can escalate.
On February 15, 2024, at around 8:15 a.m., in the neighborhood of Mott Haven, 25-year-old Destiny Bryant and 38-year-old Cheddie Defrietis got into an argument as they dealt with an apartment door that wasn’t being held open. Now, most disputes could probably be resolved with a little patience and understanding, but in this case, it led to something far more dangerous.
After the argument, Bryant decided to reach out to her boyfriend, who then contacted Dayshawn Bannister, a 29-year-old man from the Bronx. Bannister hopped onto a Bx2 bus rather aggressively, demanding that passengers vacate the bus. He was obviously on a mission, but instead of targeting Defrietis, he approached an unsuspecting 35-year-old man named Peter Crosby.
In a shocking turn of events, Bannister asked Crosby if he knew Defrietis. Without any reasonable provocation, Bannister then stabbed Crosby directly in the head, causing a severe and life-threatening injury. This alarming act punctured Crosby’s brain, shifting what could have been a light-hearted morning commute into a horrifying emergency situation.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called to the scene and quickly transported Crosby to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln for urgent treatment. The investigation led by detectives from the NYPD’s 40th Precinct saw them sift through surveillance footage to identify those involved in this frightening episode.
As an aftermath of this horrifying incident, Bannister faced serious legal ramifications. On February 6, he pled guilty to charges, which included second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree gang assault. Consequently, Bronx Supreme Court Justice Cynthia Isles sentenced him to nine years in prison along with five years of post-release supervision. This decision was announced by the Bronx District Attorney’s office last Friday.
Interestingly, this charged episode of violence comes on the heels of a broader narrative regarding crime within the New York City transit system. Despite ongoing reports detailing a remarkable 29% decline in subway crime during the first two months of 2025 in comparison to the previous year, it looks like not all types of crime are falling. In fact, felony assaults have seen a staggering 55% increase from pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
To combat these unsettling statistics, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is stepping up efforts to enhance security. This includes the installation of security cameras in subway cars and increasing police presence throughout transit systems. As riders continue to rely on public transport for their daily commutes, the hope is that these measures will create a safer environment for everyone.
While incidents like the one involving Bannister are rare, they serve as a reminder of the delicate balance of human interactions and the substantial impact that hot-tempered arguments can have. As the city moves forward, both the authorities and commuters can hope for a safer New York, free of violence and chaos.
